Back:  New Boats27Ƌ" Nepean Cruiser

1. The first part of the construction of a new 27.5 cruiser has been completed.

The 4'x 12'/27' grey box keel has been moved into the shed.

The top has been dressed with the plane, the centre line and stations have also been marked.
7. The horn timber is fitted and bolted to the stern post and knee.

The back bone is now completed ready for the rabbet.

Several coats of red primer ensures the timber does not check or split as it dries.
2. The sides of the keel are cut off and dressed
8. The Rabbet runs along the keel for the bottom plank to fit into. The sample of the rabbet is takenn from the lofting floor and knotched into the keel at each station point.
3. The stem is also roughed out ready to be fitted.
9. Once this is done the waste timber is cut away using the power saw, and the oldest wood working tool in the work shop, the adze.
4. The grey box stem has been fitted to the keel.

The stem knee has also been fitted. These components are bolted together using hand made 1/2' copper bolts.
10. The time honoured skills of Traditional Craftsmanship are brought to the fore.

Here an Adze is used to make the rabbet.
5. The stern posts are laminated using 3 layers of 12”x2” hard wood.

The backbone components are laminated and assembled using 3M Adhesive Sealant due to its excellent gluing qualities and flexibility.
11. The rabbet is roughed in, then cut and finished using the skill of the eye and hand.
6. The stern post is morticed and pocket bolted to the keel.

The laminated stern knee is also fitted then through bolted.
